When Emily joined CKLG six months ago as a Trainee Tax Executive, she brought with her an impressive academic background, a fresh perspective and a willingness to embrace a completely new profession.
Having recently completed her PhD in Chemistry, Emily might seem an unlikely recruit for the world of tax. However, the analytical thinking, problem-solving skills and attention to detail developed through years of scientific research have proven to be a great fit for a career in tax.
“One of the things that attracted me to tax is that every day is different,” says Emily. “I enjoy getting stuck into complex problems and finding practical solutions. It reminds me a little of scientific research, where you’re constantly piecing together information to understand the bigger picture.”
In just six months, Emily has made an impressive start to her career in tax. Balancing her client work with professional studies, she has already passed several tax exams and continues to expand her knowledge with enthusiasm and determination.
“Emily has achieved a huge amount in a relatively short period of time,” says Aniketa Khushu, CKLG’s Associate Director. “She’s taken on every challenge with enthusiasm, worked incredibly hard on her studies and quickly become an important member of the team.”
Learning Something New Every Day
A typical day for Emily can involve working on personal tax returns, supporting colleagues with planning opportunities, carrying out technical research and helping clients navigate an ever-changing tax landscape.
It’s the variety that she enjoys most.
“There’s always something new to learn,” she explains. “Tax legislation changes constantly, which means you’re continually developing your knowledge. I really enjoy the challenge and the opportunity to keep learning.”
Emily also values the supportive environment at CKLG.
“Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and willing to share their knowledge,” she says. “It’s a great place to start your career because there’s always someone you can ask for guidance, and everyone wants you to succeed.”
Life Beyond the Office
Outside of work, Emily enjoys a variety of activities that keep her both active and challenged. She rows for a local club on the River Cam, where she enjoys the teamwork, commitment and early morning training sessions that come with the sport. She also loves ballroom dancing, which provides a creative contrast to her analytical day job.
Most recently, however, much of her spare time has been taken up by two very important new arrivals.
“I recently adopted two cats, and they’ve definitely made life more interesting!” laughs Emily. “They’re full of personality and keeping me on my toes. It’s been an adventure getting them settled in.”
Looking Ahead
Although she is only at the beginning of her tax career, Emily is already demonstrating the qualities that will serve her well in the profession: intellectual curiosity, commitment and a genuine desire to help others.
With more professional exams on the horizon and plenty of opportunities to continue developing her skills, the future looks bright.
“I’ve learned so much in the first six months,” says Emily. “I’m excited to continue building my knowledge, supporting our clients and seeing where this career journey takes me.”
We’re delighted to have Emily as part of the CKLG team and look forward to seeing her continue to grow and thrive in the years ahead.
