Essential payroll tasks to tick off now
The 2025/26 tax year ended on 5 April 2026, and the new 2026/27 tax year is already underway. If you run a payroll, now is an important time to check that the previous tax year has been properly closed off and that your systems are ready for the year ahead.
What you need to do now
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) highlights several key payroll responsibilities for employers at this time of year:
- Submit your final payroll report for 2025/26
This should be sent to HMRC on or before your employees’ final payday of the tax year. - Update payroll records and software
From 6 April 2026, ensure your payroll software reflects the new tax year rates, thresholds, and employee records. - Provide P60s to employees
All employees who were on your payroll on 5 April must receive a P60 by 31 May 2026. - Report expenses and benefits
Expenses and benefits for the 2025/26 tax year must be reported to HMRC by 6 July 2026.
